High school culture

Cultural activities offered:

  • Eisteddfod
  • Music
  • Oratory
  • Debating

High school phase: Grades 8 to 12

Curro Langebaan realises the importance of culture in developing a well-balanced learner. Cultural experiences create the opportunity to recognise the diversity of aesthetic events and to develop through them.

Enthusiastic learners and educators are involved in a variety of disciplines, from choir to drama. In this way learners can develop a love for art, regardless of their abilities in sport or academics.

Talent and arts and culture evenings are opportunities where learners can show off their talents.

Choir

Categories are the junior and senior choir and the high school singing group. The choirs perform at various events, such as eisteddfods.

Eisteddfods

All learners who are interested, as well as those who are identified by the school, get the opportunity to take part in the eisteddfod. Curro Langebaan annually enters large numbers of participants in a wide variety of categories.

Oratory and debating

Apart from internal competitions that take place in both home and additional languages, learners have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of competitions, such as the ATKV and eisteddfod.

The foundation phase, primary school and high school take part in separate categories.

Music

The West Coast Music Academy offers private lessons at Curro Langebaan five days a week.

Practical tuition is offered in piano, digital piano, keyboard, flute, piccolo, fife, recorder, violin, viola, cello, double bass, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, cor anglais, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, euphonium, French horn, singing, guitar (classical/acoustic/electric/bass), drum-kit and classical percussion.

The above tuition includes practical musicianship, theory and sight reading. Tuition may be in classical, gospel and/or contemporary/rock music as preferred. Practical tuition is also given to Grade 10 to Grade 12 learners who take music as a school subject (subject to approval). Learners from Grade 4 to Grade 9 also have the opportunity to present Music for Arts and Culture.

Preparation for examinations is strongly encouraged, as is participation in various competitions, festivals, functions and other appearances for advanced students. Learners participate annually in Trinity College London, Rockschool, Royal Schools and UNISA examinations, as well as local eisteddfods. Participation in various duet, trio, and ensemble groups is also recommended and regular opportunities for this are created.

Learners who play an orchestra instrument can also audition for the West Coast Youth Orchestra (WCYO). WCYO rehearsals take place at Curro Langebaan.
