INTERMEDIATE & SENIOR PHASE

Intermediate and senior phase

In the intermediate phase, we offer parallel classes for both English and Afrikaans learners. This means that learners will receive all schooling in their home language. Currently Curro Nelspruit offers schooling from early childhood development (4 months old) to Grade 12.

Curro follows the national curriculum set out by the South African education department. We are, however, registered with the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), which allows us to extend leaners' learning opportunities, providing a far richer educational experience to all.

In the intermediate phase the following learning areas are provided:

  • Afrikaans home and first additional language
  • English home and first additional language
  • Siswati first additional language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences and Technology
  • Human and Social Sciences
  • Art
  • Music
  • Bible Studies
  • Life Orientation
  • Physical Education
  • Computers

In the senior phase the following learning areas are provided:

  • Afrikaans home and first additional language
  • English home and first additional language
  • Siswati first additional language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences and Technology
  • Human and Social Sciences
  • Economic and Management Sciences
  • Art
  • Music (Grade 7 only)
  • Bible Studies (Grade 7 only)

Curro Nelspruit wishes to provide a holistic education to all learners. Educators provide a variety of teaching methods to accommodate all learning types and styles.

The language departments strive to provide learners with exposure to modern and contemporary literature as well as the works of world-renowned as well as South African poets and writers. Learners are encouraged to express themselves through language and literature. This culminates in participation in public speaking, debating and participation in the eisteddfods.

Our classrooms are equipped with the latest educational teaching aids and equipment. As we are based in a nature and eco estate, we have wonderful natural surroundings that we can use as an outdoor classroom. Learners are encouraged to question the world around them, as well as to apply what they learn to the world they live in.

21st Century Learning

Teaching and learning now also include the use of tablets in the classroom. Curro is embracing 21st century learning. We use e-versions of existing 'ink and paper' textbooks on tablets for the learners in our schools. Our teachers supplement these with video clips, photos, audio files, extra notes, learners' work and homework by using our Wi-Fi intranet system at school.

Tablets can ensure that:

  • Our classes are places where lively discussions happen
  • Content stays current through regular updates
  • Learning involves solving problems and encourages thinking
  • Learners share their thinking and opinions in groups
  • Educators cater for diversity as learners work at their own pace and have support to excel or catch up
  • Alternative assessment strategies are implemented

Developing successful adolescents means providing them with life skills, such as team building, leadership and community awareness. For this reason Curro offers grade camps for approximately one week during the year, so that learners have the ability to take part and interact with a diverse set of circumstances, including physical, mental and social challenges.
