After matriculating at Dundee High School and completing compulsory army training, John completed his BA HED at the University of Natal (PMB). 

He started his first teaching post at Greytown High School in 1977 and left in 1992 as a deputy head.  He was then promoted to headmaster of a new Model D school, Hope High School, in September 1992, where he remained until 1997.

John subsequently spent six years in a retail business before returning to education in the post of headmaster of St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle in October 2003.

John has been a provincial bowler for over ten years and enjoys watching and playing any sport.  He has been married to Colleen for 35 years, and both their children are married, with his daughter living in Johannesburg and his son teaching in London.
