Changing the Game in 2017 and beyond….
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”. Malala Yousafza
Ancient philosophers like Aristotle, Plato, Rousseau and Confucius spent much of their time trying to define the different purposes of education and schooling in their respective societies.
These early thinkers shared many common ideas – the most important being that school should prepare all students to live a useful life.
In 1938, Dewey argued that the primary purpose of education and schooling is not so much to prepare students to live a useful life, but to teach them how to adapt to their immediate environment in order to make a meaningful contribution. (Dewey, J. (1938). Experience and education)
This has never been more true than today where the young people we work with are facing an ever-changing world.
At Curro Aurora, we are constantly examining and evaluating our curricula in order to provide a 21st century education for our learners. We are aware of the importance of reading, writing and arithmetic. We also value effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. These all form an integral part of the curriculum and we encourage and support our educators to teach these skills in every classroom on a daily basis. In this way, we can ensure that we remain part of tomorrow’s world.
In order for us to facilitate effective teaching and learning, we need all stakeholders to play an active role in the education process. Parents, students and the school must take responsibility for their respective roles.
As newly appointed Executive Head of Curro Aurora, I have a responsibility to:
I firmly believe that Curro Aurora, as a leading player in the educational arena, has the potential to become a real “game/changer” when it comes to 21st century teaching and learning.
Together with the excellent management teams, passionate teachers, skilled administrators and hard-working support staff, I look forward to playing an active role in our efforts to change lives and to make good on our promise to deliver quality education for every child placed in our care.
May God bless us on our journey into 2017!
